Logar(Pashto: لوګر, Dari: لوگر) is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, situated in the eastern part of the country. Its name is derived from the Pashto words "Loy" (great) and "Ghar" (mountain).
• Capital: Puli Alam.
• Population: Approximately 442,037 as of 2021 estimates.
• Area: Roughly 3,880 to 4,568 square kilometers.
• Districts: The province is divided into 7 districts: Puli Alam, Mohammad Agha, Baraki Barak, Khoshi, Charkh, Kharwar, and Azra.
• Demographics: A multi-ethnic society primarily composed of Pashtuns (approx. 60%) and Tajiks, with a minority of Hazaras.
Geography and Environment
• Landscape: Characterized as a relatively flat river valley in the north and central regions, surrounded by rugged mountains to the east and south.
• Logar River: This central river enters from the west and exits to the north, providing essential irrigation for the fertile Logar Valley.
• Strategic Location: Often called the "Gates of Jihad" or the southern gate to Kabul, it lies just south of the national capital.
Economy and Industry
• Agriculture: The primary economic driver, with 31% of households dependent on it. Major crops include wheat, maize, potatoes, and tobacco.
• Mining: The province holds significant mineral wealth, most notably the Mes Aynak copper deposit, which is one of the largest untapped copper mines in the world.
• Livestock: Sheep, cattle, and camels are frequently raised, and the province has a small honey production industry.
Historical Significance
• Archaeology: Mes Aynak is also a major archaeological site, home to a 2,600-year-old Zoroastrian fire temple, numerous Buddhist stupas, and over 1,000 statues.
• Recent Conflict: Logar has been a site of intense conflict for decades, serving as a key Mujahideen supply route during the Soviet-Afghan War. It fell to the Taliban in August 2021 during their national offensive.
Culture and Sports
• Sports: Cricket is the most popular sport, and the province has produced several members of the Afghanistan national cricket team, including former captain Mohammad Nabi.
• Languages: Pashto and Dari are the primary languages spoken.
